THE ROMANCE OF ROSES IN PERFUMERY
This week is dedicated to a timeless symbol of beauty and love: the Rose. Let's explore the multifaceted charm of this beloved flower in the world of perfumery.
ROSES IN PERFUMERY: A GLOBAL AFFAIR
Roses have captivated perfumers for centuries, but not all roses are created equal. Each variety and its origin bring a unique story and scent profile to the world of fragrance.
Bulgarian Roses: The Bulgarian Rose, particularly the Damask variety (Rosa Damascena), is famed for its deep, intense aroma. Grown in the Valley of Roses, these blooms are a staple in many classic perfumes, offering a rich, voluptuous scent.
Rose de Mai from Grasse: In the picturesque region of Grasse, the Rose de Mai reigns supreme. Delicate and slightly honeyed, this rose is harvested in May and celebrated for its lighter, more nuanced fragrance.
THE ROSE DE MAI FESTIVAL
Each year, the Rose de Mai is celebrated in Grasse with a festival that's as much a feast for the senses as it is a tribute to the flower. It's a time when the air is thick with the scent of fresh blooms, and the art of perfumery is celebrated in all its glory. I will be there this year, with bells on!!!
EXTRACTION AND ESSENCE
Extracting the essence of a rose is an art in itself. Whether it's through steam distillation or solvent extraction, each method captures a different aspect of the rose's complex aroma. It's this variety that makes rose a versatile and much-loved ingredient in perfumery.
THE TIMELESS APPEAL OF ROSE SCENTS
From the ancient gardens of Persia to modern perfumeries, the rose has maintained its status as the queen of flowers. Its scent can evoke a range of emotions – from the warmth of a summer garden to the depth of a rich, velvety bouquet.

Let’s continue our aromatic journey, and dive into the distinct aroma profiles of rose essential oil and rose absolute, and the challenges posed by industry regulations.
ROSE ESSENTIAL OIL VS. ROSE ABSOLUTE
Rose Essential Oil: Extracted primarily through steam distillation, rose essential oil captures the fresh, bright aspects of the flower. It's often described as having a crisp, clean aroma, with a hint of green, that reflects the lighter side of the rose. It’s this version that’s traditionally used in aromatherapy
Rose Absolute: Preferred by many perfumers, rose absolute is extracted through solvent extraction, resulting in a richer, more voluptuous scent. It's known for its depth and complexity, often evoking a slightly boozy quality reminiscent of fine cognac. This intoxicating aspect of rose absolute is what makes it a coveted ingredient in high-end perfumery.
THE CHALLENGE OF REGULATIONS
The perfumery world, however, faces a significant challenge due to regulations from organizations like IFRA (International Fragrance Association). One such regulation revolves around a component found in rose absolute – methyl eugenol. Due to safety concerns, the use of this treasured material is now heavily restricted, much to the dismay of perfumers who value its unique aroma.
This restriction has led to a dilemma in the industry: how to preserve the traditional and beloved scent profiles of classic perfumes while adhering to modern safety standards. It's a delicate balance between artistry and regulation, one that continues to shape the future of fragrance creation.
A FRAGRANT FAREWELL
As we explore the world of roses in perfumery, let's not forget the artistry and challenges that go into capturing the essence of this iconic flower. The rose, in all its forms, remains a symbol of beauty and complexity in the world of scent. So, the next time you encounter a rose perfume, remember the journey of this majestic flower. From the sun-drenched fields of Bulgaria and Grasse to the delicate art of extraction, every drop of rose essence tells a story of beauty, tradition, and olfactory art.
Unlock Radiant Skin With Rose Water
Rose water is a by-product of the steam distillation process, in the video below I talk about my favourite rose water and what to look for when buying and why you should use it in your skincare routine…
DID YOU KNOW…
It takes approximately 10,000 roses to produce just one single teaspoon of rose oil? This labour-intensive process, involving the delicate harvesting of rose petals at dawn when their fragrance is most potent, contributes to the preciousness and high value of natural rose oil in perfumery. The sheer volume of roses required, combined with the meticulous extraction process, makes rose oil one of the most treasured and luxurious ingredients in the fragrance world.
Until next Tuesday, may your world be fragrant and full of roses.
Fragrantly yours,
“Roses are the whispers of dawn, delicately picked to capture a fleeting moment of beauty. In each drop of rose oil lies the essence of ten thousand petals, a symphony of nature’s patience and artistry.”
